The study of Proxemics comprises research about interpersonal space and distance. An aspect of nonverbal communication, Proxemics considers how parameters of personal space, distance, territoriality, crowding, & density have meaning and are expressive communication. As nonverbal expressions, Proxemics/appropriate spacial behaviors are taught through socialization and imitation. Each component of Proxemics was present at MCNW and had an interpreted meaning:

Proxemics were especially present in the “intern section” of the MCNW office. At the rear end of the space, separated by a solid wall from the main working area in which full time coworkers’ desks were stationed, the interns had a row of desks. Only people with the title of “intern” worked/sat in that area. This nonverbally, structurally, and physically separated interns form the rest of the staff. This sent a message that was somewhat at odds with the collaborative, approachable culture at MCNW.

Personal space was also at play in the “intern corner.” If not that many interns were in-office, it was common to set up extend personal space by leaving a chair or two open in between you and the other interns in the space. This communicated the need to focus, but the distance was not so great that personal space could not be breached in a friendly manner. Territoriality was also present in this space, as certain chairs were ‘claimed’ by interns; either through repeated use, verbal comments, or physical indicators (leaving coat on chair all day, placing personal sticker on that part of desk, etc.).
